I again went to thesaurus.reference.com and typed in rainbow. The word chimera came up, along with many, many others. One of the definitions of chimera is "a fanciful mental illusion or fabrication". Perfecto!
I found a sweet birdcage at Joann fabrics on clearance and I immediately saw a fairy doll to go in it. As I made her, it was fun to watch her personality emerge. She was intended to look sad, trapped in her cage, but instead emerged with a bit of indignant feisiness showing on her face. Her hair was to look mussed, like she had been imprisoned for a time and had not had a chance to primp. Again, there was that feisty attitiude. So, her attitude won out and the cage is now in the attic. My dad said she looks like a bad little Reenie. hmmmmmmm.
Falydia's outfit is made of doiley scraps from my great-grandmother's fabric stash. I pieced them together and gave them a touch of glitter- which does not show so well in the pic. I knit her cuffs, collar and scrunchie to tie her outfit together. Her wings are made from 2 pieces of fusible interfacing ironed together over fine wire (so they bend) and painted with acrylics and water soluble oil pastels. I also burnt the wing edges over a candle before painting to give them a more wingy look.
Falydia prefers this position. She is a feisy soul and is always trying to calm herself. I was contemplating a name for her when a friend said she looks like a Lydia. My friend did not know that Falydia was one of the names on a list I had made.
